- Hourly wage or annual salary
- The gross amount before taxes. If your hourly pay changes with shift differentials or tips, use the average hourly rate you earn.
- Hours worked per week
- Enter the hours you are actually paid for in a typical week. Part-time schedules and irregular hours give very different annual figures from a 40-hour week.
- Weeks worked per year
- Use 52 for a full year of pay. Subtract weeks if you go unpaid for holidays, seasonal breaks or gaps between contracts.
How to read your results
In the hourly-to-salary direction, the main number is the annual salary equivalent, followed by weekly, biweekly and average monthly pay for the weeks you work. An extra line shows the same wage on a standard 2,080-hour year (40 hours × 52 weeks), which helps when comparing with a full-time salary that a company has quoted. In the salary-to-hourly direction, the main number is the hourly wage, with the pay per week worked, the average monthly pay and the hourly wage on a 2,080-hour year shown for comparison.
When the comparison line and the main result are far apart, the difference is coming from your hours or weeks. That gap is the most important thing to understand before you accept or reject an offer.
The formulas
These are direct conversions. They do not include overtime, taxes, benefits or any pay that varies from week to week.
Worked examples
$25 an hour, full time
At $25 an hour, 40 hours a week and 52 weeks, weekly pay is $1,000.00 and annual pay is $52,000, or $4,333.33 on average each month.
$22 an hour, 25 hours a week, 50 weeks
Part-time weekly pay is $550.00. Over 50 weeks the annual total is $27,500, which is $2,291.67 a month on average. On a 2,080-hour year the same wage would produce $45,760, so the reduced schedule accounts for the gap.
A $52,000 salary, then a $78,000 salary at 45 hours
A $52,000 salary over 52 weeks of 40 hours is $25.00 an hour. A $78,000 salary that regularly requires 45 hours a week comes to $33.33 an hour, which is lower than the $37.50 you get from the 40-hour convention.
Part-time, seasonal and gig work
Annualizing an hourly wage is straightforward only when hours are steady. For part-time and seasonal jobs, work out an honest average: total hours in a typical month, times twelve, times the wage. Do not annualize a busy month, which will overstate what you earn over a year. For contract work, remember that gaps between assignments are weeks with no pay, and that self-employed workers pay both halves of Social Security and Medicare tax and receive no paid leave, so the wage needs to be higher than an employee’s to produce the same take-home pay.
If you are comparing a full-time salaried offer with an hourly one, translate both to the same measure. Salaried roles usually pay for holidays and leave, hourly roles often do not, and the value of insurance and retirement contributions can differ a lot. A slightly lower hourly figure can be the better offer once benefits are counted.
Assumptions and limits
The conversions are simple arithmetic, and they show gross pay. Overtime is not included, so an hourly worker who regularly works more than 40 hours will earn more than the base conversion shows; the overtime calculator prices those hours. For a complete after-tax picture, use the take-home pay calculator. To break a salary into weekly and monthly pay while keeping the salary as the input, use the salary calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?
Multiply the hourly wage by the hours you work each week, then by the weeks you work each year. For a full-time schedule that is hours × 40 × 52, or the wage times 2,080.
Should I count paid time off in the weeks?
If you are paid for it, count it. Paid holidays and vacation are part of what an employer pays, so the full 52 weeks is the right number when your time off is paid. Use fewer weeks only for unpaid gaps.
Why does my salary-to-hourly result differ from the 2,080-hour figure?
Because you entered different hours or weeks. Working 45 hours a week or fewer than 52 weeks changes the divisor, and the result changes with it.
Does this include overtime?
No. It converts a base wage. Overtime is priced separately in the overtime calculator.
Is the annual amount before taxes?
Yes. It is gross pay. Income tax, payroll taxes and deductions reduce what you receive.
